here is the motor i just got with my bayliner. its a 86 50hp.
question is this the rectifier?

coils look ok? it runs pretty good, but low idle its a little off. will try and clean the carbs.

whats the clear tubing for? i know its the outlet of the thermostat, but what is the purpose? i plan on installing a tell tale, first force ive owned.

i will say that the motor is well built, took off the carb and could not believe how simple the design, brass float, ease of installation of the carb.

if the motor is running and i take the leads off the battery and it dies, is this normal? i need to replace the rectifier, do i replace or install a regulator as well?

sorry for all the questions, but i am a newbie for the force. much easier to work on than my evinrude or merc.

thanks

NEVER disconnect the battery from any running engine! That is the rectifer and I'm sure you need one by now.The plastic hose used to be clear and was sort of a tell tale so you could see the water moving out of the thermostat. The cracks in those coils do not look good and are going to leave you stuck somewhere. Good luck,Ted

Good Pictures! Please give me a quick summary as to how you insert the pictures in your text or where I can find the info vs attachments. I know the process in my browser with e-mail and I know how to add attachments here. My attachments are never as large as the pics inserted in the text. Most of all, the pictures/attachments add good details to the posts toward ideas and instructions. "For some reason and the first time", my attachment in this post is showing large (like I have only seen Pics inserted in text in the past). How did that happen? Should all thumbnails show-up full-screen when you use the enlarger (as they never have before today)?

Such as: Re: Can I add a telltale to the Force?

Mark42 Just below mid-way down at the address below has outstanding pics inserted in his text on adding A TellTail.

Ok, here are my pics:

The basic install using the Baxtr design:

That engine appears to be in decent condition. The clear tubing delivers water FROM the block TO the thermostat and head. The only head cooling is the central tube running from top to bottom alongside the plugs. The head is the old design used in the 60s, BUT, Chrysler and Force used this head interchangeably with a full jacketed head on a number of model years. Probably depended upon whether they wanted to save money or not.

Since the alternator supplies power for the ignition coils in addition to recharging the battery, if the engine is running and you remove the battery positive lead, if the engine keeps running the rectifier is good. If the engine stalls, the rectifier is bad or the alternator stator is bad. This is a case where momentarily removing battery cables will not harm anything as there is still a load placed on the alternator.

Your coils are cracked and eventually may need replacing but if they fire well now, why fight with success?

vow,
i post the pictures to photobucket, then i simply copy and paste the image code. if you take close ups, i use the macro set up on the camera. works pretty good. hope this helps?

Thanks dkonrai! I feel my attachments have just as much quality if they will continue to enlarge full-screen (to show details). Another software application is the last thing I need to master now (since the option is not built in).

thanks, so i will try a new rectifier first. then the stator. hope that its the rectifier. i plan on using a regular battery vs a deep cycle and will use the marine as a back up.
thanks! :)
