Cruising along at around 30mph in my 16 ft. Capri when I heard the loud bang and the engine froze up. Got it home and found what looks like the sheared off screw from a connecting rod cap. It's the top cylinder that had the problem, and the boat really is a project. So I guess the question is: would I be better off looking for another used outboard, or pop the powerhead off and take it in for repairs? I found rebuilt powerheads here on iboats for around $1700, but I got the whole package for 500 and I'm not looking to make this thing like new again. I've seen some used outboards for $450-$750, 55- 90 hp. Any suggestions on what I should consider before my next move?

Re: '86 Force 85 HP seized up.

Two things are necessary for it to be worthwhile repairing:
1. The crankpin must not be damaged
2. The rod must not have cracked the block

If any of the above conditions exists, then it will be too expensive to repair

If all three conditions are met, then, if you do the work yourself, you can rebuild the block for around 5-700 bucks replacing all three pistons. Less if you only replace the one that was damaged. If all you need is to replace the rod, used ones should cost around 20 bucks each.

SO: Is it worth it? That depends on you and your attitude toward the boat and engine. Consider though that if you do a rebuild, you will know the exact condition of the engine AND you will have the satisfaction of having done it yourself.

Almost no special tools are needed and the disassembly and assembly are relatively simple. If you decide you do want to repair, First assess the damage then come back to the forums. We will give you plenty of help; you almost can't go wrong.
