Well here we go!

I've just gotten my hands on my first project which I quickly got stuck in my yard (see thread here http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=426093)
but am working away on getting things up & running.

I'm focused now on bellows, impeller, motor, etc but trying to get an idea of what I need to do for the hull. Most of the finish is in good shape with a few scratches here & there but the back of the boat was exposed to the sun and is in bad shape. There are also a few good dings & areas where the fiberglass is exposed on the bottom of the hull. I'm not too worried about it looking pretty at this point - just don't want to do more damage when its in the water.

Any ideas on the best approach? I'm still getting up to speed on some of the great info here and could use some advice on materials, approach, etc.

Thanks!

use Gelcoat paste to fill in the gouges and sratches. Make sure to clean the scratches and gouges first and then use some acetone. You can use colors to try and match your colors. If the gouges are to big you might want to consider a product like MarineTex. It's an epoxy product and Gelcoat will NOT stick to epoxy so you might not want to use it. Hard to tell from you pics how bad the bottom of the hull is. If you can see the fibers in the glass then you might want to mix up some polyester resin and some poly fibers to make a filler and then gel coat over that.

Your boat so it's up to you.

I'm just sayin...:D

Probably the quickest repair for that fiberglass would be marine tex.

Hello Sixman and welcome to Iboats..

Your right on track .. bellows, imps and the workings of the boat.

Those little chipporoonies will not get any worse then what they are now m8.. use it and fix in the fall/winter. ( dont worry about them unless you have some kinda crack going into the fiberglass which I dont see ).

Oh..and your "white" gel is likely "aztec surf white" or just "surf" .. the Aztec will probably blend well ..

YD.

PS. Im sure some will say that just scuff and cover it for now with some(thing) .. you can if you wish .. or .. not.

Thanks guys!

Any ideas on the paint chipping away? Do I need to worry about that? There aren't any noticeable ding or chips in the gelcoat - just the paint is totally scorched and just flakes right off.

Hello Sixman..

You mean on the transom ?

If so..thats just some kinda clearcoat/wax crap some cowboy applied coming off..has nothing to do with your red/maroon gelcoat . Its safe to remove and buff.

Might have to do some serious sanding to get if off... or try some acetone on a rag .. ( acetone will not hurt gelcoat ).

If you look at the bottom left pic of the transom you can kinda see the maroon is peeling off - the gray seems to be under the gelcoat I think. You can feel a ridge and edges where the maroon peels off - that's my biggest concern as I don't want it to spread but it might be too late.

Then it has to be a repair...

Not prepped right or something..but if you get a lift off gel then its a bad repair..

Sorry I thought it was wax..but It may be a poor repair..

If your saying you can lift the gel/paint .. then its a repair..

Your trans is more than likely "patched" .. unsure though....

You know when you look at it closer ( tappy tappy with a small hammer around those fittings on the trans ). ...

So is that something I can take on my self or better to get someone to refinish?

The boat was stored in a multi-level dry dock for years with the stern sticking out and getting sun exposure - that's my guess as to why its in such bad shape. I'll still double check it. What am I listening for w/a small hammer? Hollow sound?

Aye six.. sound for dull "thuds" .. tap around your trans and you will hear the different sounds .. If its a dull thud then you have delam or rot.

As far as your finish goes you can allways try to sand it out.. but you have to remember if its a repair you might burn through to there filler/glass and have to recoat it.
