Ok tach will work at idle mostly then go to 3000rpms sometimes more and quit working til idle again and volt gauge always shows 12volts never going higher. My question is I never have to charge battery but I don't show any gain in voltage even with meter at battery so is rectifier (35 amp) bad it will sometimes also miss then pick back up or is stator going bad? Thanks for any help.

Re: 86 gt150 rectifier?

Could be the Regulator/Rectifier (water cooled) or the stator. There are specific tests for both of these. If you do a search in the forums you will probably find the procedures for testing these components. These parts are quite expensive to just go replacing, but you should make the repairs as soon as you can because failing to correct the problem of either could cause the other to fail from what I have read. I have performed these tests before, they are quite simple and give definitive results. I'll look around for the procedures and post if I find them.

Re: 86 gt150 rectifier?

I did the ohm meter test on stator putting leads to the two wires coming from stator that connect to rectifier at terminal and it was in range with what omc manual says but why if rectifier is bad does my battery not go dead with all the starting, depth finder, and livewell pump use
