86 Johnson 20hp ?'s

Just picked up a mint 20hp gonna start tuning her up.. was wondering if anyone knows or a place i can find some quick info on this 1986 Johnson.. looking for the following info..

Plug Brand/numbers what Johnson calls for

Lower unit Oil Ration

Gas Mixture.. (says 100:/1 on cover but NEVER heard any motors running that)

ok..just looked in my OMC manual.....something you should get..get one by OMC no others....

plug is QL77JC4 it says gapped at .040 but it may have changed to .030...only run Champions your motor will run best on them.....I have a 35 hp sorta the same motor and I gapped at .030 told to me by a Johnson tech...

OMC came out with a revision..the oil mix for your motor is 50:1 not 100:1....

on the lower end just buy Marine lower end oil....make sure you get new seals for the drain plugs....don't use the old seals..or you may get water in the lower end....the seals are cheap....get at a marina or dealer...bring in the old one....I actaully got some at a Mercury dealer when I was away they were the same thing....the gear oil is 85-90 I believe..API-GL5 Rated..

open both drains....check for metal pieces or filings....then fill from bottom till it comes out the top....then replace top plug ..then bottom...

I buy it by the quart..but I bought a pump also its like 7.99 at the auto parts store....easier to pump it in then the squeeze tubes...

one other thing find out when the last water pump was installed if over 2 your better off putting a new one in..and change every 2 years..save you a ton of money from a over heated motor....

always check the pisser for water....takes a second to look back....

al-53.. thanks for all the advice and info !!! he did give me a water pump for it so will also be changing that, i see your from Mass.. I am just outside of springfield area,where abouts you located..? thanks again!
