Ok, So I have 1996 Johnson 40hp. Didn't start for two years. So I rebuilt the carbs. Started it up, Idles rough but runs fine after 1500 rpm. I did some research on this forum and realized that I overlooked the core plugs during the rebuilds. Took the carbs back off rebuilt the core plugs then put the engine back together. Here's where it gets good. The engine still idles rough, No better or worse. However, During the second rebuild I did not fully tighten the bottom carb drain plug. Now the engine idles perfect, However gas is shooting out the drain plug like a water hose. Put the drain plug back in tightened it down, Idles rough again. Someone please help, 75 hours into a 16' Privateer restoration and my engine runs like crap. Thanks in advance, Ryan
Silver lining---- The boat looks great.

did you remove the jets and clean them? did you blow out the pick up tube. did you remove and clean the slow speed air mixture screw, & readjust?

Yes, Did all of those things. I completely removed all jets and cleaned all ports and the pickup tube. Also, I've done the carb. adjustment per Reeves instructions and I get little response when tightening (leaning) the slow speed needle valve. It seems as though I can never get either carb. to get to a nice steady idle.

On the carb that was leaking, remove again, replace the needle and seat and check for proper float operation/adjustment. Sounds like it's leaking and running rich at idle.

That'd be my guess.

Thanks, I'll give it a shot tonight. This will be the fourth time they have been off. I'm on the verge of pulling the trigger on an E-Tec. Thanks, Ryan
