Grave digger need a little more info. Why was motor rebuilt to start with? Was this motor and rig with same prop operating at higher rpms before?Good water flow through motor.Thermostat operating ?Any temp alarms hooked up?What is pitch on 13 1/4 prop?

Re: 86 johnson wot problems

sry here ya go i got the boat and the first night it ran 5400(same prop as now). number 4 on the crank chipped and ate itself up. thats why the rebuild. but before the crank gave out it started dropping rpm to like 4800 then 4400. so thats where i am right now. i did notice last time i was out in it, the flywheel was very hot and the stator covering has melted off in some places. so tomorrow i will get a new stator and timing sensor. do you think that this could be my problem? doesnt the stator give voltage to the coils?

Most certainly stator is problem with operational symptoms you mention , however the cause of overheat will need to be determined and remedied.did you ever get any high temp alarms before noticing flywheel seemed hotter than normal?any alarms hooked up?If I understand your post correctly #4 crank gave out after similar symptoms before rebuid and your now in the same situation?

no overheating alarms, yes they are hooked up. the block seems just warm to the touch. i just removed the flywheel, and found cracks in the stator cover i tghink the stator was going bad and the added resistance in the windings must be causeing the flywheel to heat up. no other engine componant is hot(block, heads) just the flywheel only

Sounds like good bad news then .Find yourself a stator and hopefully you'll be in bussiness. When you get it up and running take a closer look at the rpms as 5400 at WOT is a little low for that motor.Might need to lower pitch a little if 5400 is all you can squeeze out after stator repair.Good luck
