well, I replaced my stator and it cured my problem of not being able to go over 2000 rpm. before the stator went bad the tach showed some erratic behavior but not it wont work at all. it might be that the tach is just dead but I am thinking it must have something to do with the work I did. is it possible that I have a wire that is not grounding well. I worked around the switch boxes and stator wires.... any ideas???
thanks

The Send wire for the tach connects to either yellow wire at the rectifier. Make sure you reconnected it when you changed your stator.

Thanks for the reply Rick.
That is the wire that is either gray or tan? hard to tell after all these years. It is connected at the rectifier. I never removed it when I pulled the yellow wires for the stator. Is it possible that I have a problem also at the rectifier? Would that have gone bad as a result of the stator problem?
Now that I have it back together I plan on taking it out tomorrow and tune the carbs. This boat has not been in the water in a year and its time to start enjoying it again.

Check the continutity between each yalleow terminal and the re terminal. Then reveerse the meter leads. There should be continuity in one direction only.

checked the wires..... just as you said. continunity one way and not the other. I pulled apart the harness connector and cleaned it and used some elec grease. conected it back up and it works.
Runs like a top now. had it out for about an hour today. I still need to do some tuning with the carbs and timing but all in all its back into service.
Thanks to all on this forum that offered advice. I found volumes of info here that i could not find anywhere else. I read so many threads my eyes started to hurt.
