Ok. Three of the last four times on the water the following has occurred:

She'll run great for a good 30-45 minutes. We'll turn off the engine for 20-45 minutes, and then when I try to restart, it doesn't sound right. If I get it started, it's only for a few minutes. Then it dies, and won't restart. It gets VERY hot as well. Well over 175 degrees. Once we get home and it cools down, it starts again.

Last weekend this same thing happened. However, I noticed that the secondary (clear) fuel line running from the fuel pump to the carborator was clogged with a bunch of thick green goo. I don't understand why this happened, but when I removed the line and tried to turn it over -- it started right up.

Questions:
1. What is the green goo.
2. Did disconnecting this line (and running without one) really make the difference in my engine turning over?
3. Why is my engine getting so hot.

Has anyone seen this line clogged before?
My guess is that this clogging doesn't allow the diaphram in the fuel pump to breath, thereby not allowing the pump to move fuel to the carborator?? Right? Wrong?

HELP!

No idea what that green goo is but that hose has a very important function......
It's function is to dump the excess fuel from a ruptured diaphragm in your fuel pump into the carb. instead of into the bilge!
Running without that hose connected is illegal & extremely dangerous.....
You are risking explosion & fire running with it disconnected!
Don't do it!

Welcome to iboats, BTW:)......JK
Hard to say if that hose had any bearing on your hard start issue.....
As far as the getting hot issue, does it run at normal temp. for the 45 mins?
All engines heat up at the sender after they are shut off, because there is no more cooling water flow.....
Is this a closed or raw water cooled system?
And btw, why not just clean out that tube & reinstall it?
If you see fuel in that tube after it is cleaned out you need to replace your fuel pump.....
It is possible that the green goo is the residue from a previous pump failure......

I understand the function of the hose, and it's been cleaned and reinstalled.

The engine is cooled by the water the boat sits in -- I suppose that means a raw cooled system.

I've also learned that the green goo is fuel vapor residue, and is a fairly common occurance.

Still don't know why it won't restart after sitting.
