I paid $100 for a '86 Monte Carlo today.

I bought it as a field beater, gonna drive her till she drops demolition derby style and junk her.

Now today I get it to the field and start looking her over.
The car is just a regular Monte, not the SS. It has no power options, crank windows and locks, under 100,000 original miles, and those nice SS rims that must be worth some money. Someone spent some time on the body, right now she's in primer and bondo, but every panel is perfect, its pretty much ready for paint, with some rot on the lower rockers, which are covered with trim anyway.

I'm starting to think that this car is too nice to wreak.
As I see it, the things of value are the good running 305 engine, it doesn't like to idle while cold, but I think its just a carb thing. Then the wheels have to be worth something, plus all the straight body panels gotta have some value.

I can't decide weather I should
A- stick to the plan and wheel the **** out of it, and have a hell of a time doing it
B- Make a winter project out of it (I can paint it myself at school) and maybe have something nice in the spring
C- resell it the way it is, and maybe make $100, or $150
D- part it out

How can I decide whats best? When looking at a car like this, how do I know if its worth the time and money?

I'd part it out and find a different $100 beater. Look on ebay and see if you can make a profit on the parts...I'm sure you could probably get at least $100 just for the engine.

That would be an LS then? Nice cars, great ride. I had a couple of '78s one of which I rebuilt and hopped up the 305, same for the TH350 tranny. I lowered the suspension, a lot of traction can be found by making the long trailing arms as close to parallel with the ground as you can in the 4 link rear suspension. After all was done I actually got better gas mileage than before I stared and I had a fast car that handled.

You can do what you want with yours. If it's got more than a little rust then don't bother fixing it up. There is more than $100 in parts there for sure. If it is really nice yet sell it for a profit or tinker with it if you're inclined to. The Monte Carlo is a great platform and plenty of goodies are available for it. Lots of backyard stock-cars are Monte Carlos.

I would put a decent coat of paint on it, give it a bath inside and out. and sell it for a good profit.....Right now cars like that are selling for 1000 or so...

I have an 87 pontiac grand prix(last yr for the ss body style) with a 74-350 and 350 trans....Lots of fun to drive..I barely have to be in it to make the tires bark through the first 3 gears.....Cars been laid up for almost 3 years, plan on having it on the road in the next month..Plan to fix some door rust, fresh paint and sell....

Its up to you, but like I said I would fix up sell, then buy another beater to play crashem up derby with, plus put some cash in the pocket.

Those cars are quite popular here with the 'younger' crowd. Fix the rot, leave it in black primer (sorry, California suede that is)... a set of decent used wheels... clean it up real nice... and flog it. I financed my entire youth with this game plan :)

You can have some fun with some hi performance parts on that 305.

If you dont have to worry about smog equipment, put in a decent cam, carb, and intake and have fun.

Ken

Very popular "hobby Stock" car at the dirt tracks. Put in in the newspaper as a car that would be excellant for the hobby dirt racer. You will make your money back and have fun doing it.
