bought boat earlier this season. boat was running fine, about 35 mph, temp was fine, coolant level at full. Was running wide open for about 20 min, suudenly came to a stop. To the best of my knowledge I did not hit anything. motor runs fine, just won't go into gear. With motor off, engine in gear, prop will make ratchet sound while turning clockwise. will not turn counter clockwise. When boat stopped, coolant was empty, smelled burnt rubber smell. any help greatly appreciated

Look on the back side of the engine. Do you see "rubber dust"?? If so you have spun your coupler. Your going to have to remove engine and outdrive to fix.

Tony, I would check the coupler again, like trent said, what you discribe is a classic twisted coupler, once the coupler craps out your engine will overheat very quickly and the boat will stop moving. smells horrible .........good luck

hey guys, checked the back of the engine again, no dust....pulled plug, no rubber parts. Is there an easy way to see if its a spun hub on the prop

Scribe a Mark on the Prop,+ Hub........
Then Run it....

I Also think you need a Coupler............

I just had a spun hub myself. my sistuation was it would go into gear at low rpms. once i raised rpms the moter would wind out and the boat would stop with no prop turn. your drive should still go into gear and the motor should rev with a spun hub to my knowledge..
