seems like the indicator stream is a little slow with the muffs and in a tank I get nothing or nothing for a while! just bought it and wanted to check it out before the lake!!! checked the impeller and looks good! did find some pieces of gasket. flushed out really well. even removed thermostat covers and found that the thermostats were already removed! would this cause a reduced or no indicator stream, via no backpressure? would this decrease cooling on a outboard since it isn't pressured like a auto at least with out the thermostats in it? thanks,,, larry

Re: 86 suzuki 2stoke dt150v6, ok to run with no thermostats?

You asked so here goes:

1) You "checked" the impeller and it looked good. You had the lower unit down so why not replace the impeller. Looking good is not a measure of impeller quality. One that looks good may not pump water worth a hoot. Replace it!
2) Theremostats were put in the engine for a purpose. Not just because they had a bunch laying around and needed to use them up. They control the engine warm up and ensure it is at the proper operating temperature. If they weren't needed the manufacturer wouldn't have put them in there.
3) Ever heard of cold-seizing? Engines can seize due to the pistons expanding at a greater rate than the block. THAT is just ONE of the reasons thermostats are used.
4) Would it affect cooliing? Yes -- because water passes unrestricted through the engine thus creating the possiblity of hot spots and over cooling.
5) Could it affect the tell tale stream. Don't know the cooling system on your particular engine but yes.
