Bought a 14foot fiberglass with a 86yr Johnson elec.start ob kind of a
fixer upper. Tried the ob in a tub started and sounded ok no problem.
Got up in the morning went out to the boat and found that some one
had ripped out the wireing from the key switch and plus some
lighting . Now the lighting i can fix but the switch wireing has me
stumped. The ob has only 2 #6 app. neg and pos. going to it and they
came direct from the battery. Now the wireing is the same not touched
from when i ran it last nite i checked it. This has me stumped to were
the wires go. Geez its driving me nuts on how it started without going
to the ob? App. any help cheers quill :)

Although the ignition system is a solid state ignition system, it is self contained and does not depend on being supplied voltage via a battery. The stator under the flywheel supplys voltage to the powerpack as the flywheel rotates.

Someone here will no doubt supply you a wiring diagram or advise you as to where the wires go on the switch.

Thanks Tashasdaddy :)
I could be mistaken but that looks like a relay or something. There
is nothing like that in the boat but there is a selenoid in the ob. The
outboard started ok with the wiring as it is now. (To the ob).
But when they ripped out the key sw. with all the wireing i am
stumped to were the wireing goes or even how it started when i
tested it the night before. Phoned some shops and all they can say is
bring it in for 90 bucks an hour. Ya i got that kind of money for
(i think) for something that simple. Could it be i am just dumb ?
Hell if i keep this up maby they will kik me out? (forum);)
Anyway thanks again cheers Quill :)

Quill.... the item that you are calling a relay is actually the rear view of the ignition switch with the lettered electrical terminals. The diagram in its entirety is what is normally found within the OMC control box.

Are the wires that you need to connect to the ignition switch the same in color as Tashasdaddy's diagram or some other color. If some other color, let us know exactly what those colors are.

Hi joe and Trashadaddy First the wires were ripped out and taken alone
with other stuff. Now don;t forget its a 86 ob.
Were would the wires go? I no there was only 2 # 6 going up to the ob.
Do you think the grounding has anything to do with problem?

Grounding having something to do with the problem??? To my knowledge, the problem is that someone ripped the ignition wires out of the rig, at least that's what comes across to me. I'll see if I can locate a complete wiring diagram, and if so, I'll upload it to you.

Guys, You no sometimes when you have a problem that you cant solve
and the answer to it is right in front of you. So i am going to stand
back and leave it for awhile and see what happens.
Now the question about the wires as i remember thay were all
blue #14. going to the key sw. and i no that wont help.
The boat has gone over to my daughters place and i won;t be going there till next Sat. In the mean time i have found out were to buy all the
stuff for the steering so when i get the bracket up.Will install. Looks
fairly easy thanks to your help.. Have to use the bracket as there is
just no room without moving the 40 off center. Still don"t no if it effects
anything if i move the 40 off center?? Will be in touch
So thanks guys for taking the time to help
Cheers Quill :) :)
