87 150 Merc. Water flow?

Can't get my motor to pee! I've replaced the pump and had the lower unit off 3 times since, I've replaced many water pumps on other outboards I've owned before, but this one's got me baffled. My question is, how does the copper pipe between the block and the pump connect at the block end? Is there a rubber grommet or hose that connects the 2? I've blown back through the pee hose and had no resistance at all, so I'm confused. Thanks for any thoughts.

Check the poppet valve, it could be stuck open which would dump water from the block back into the exhaust... It should only open at high rpms, but stuck open it will cause your symptoms at lower rpms....<br />Its down low on the starboard side of the block, below the switchboxes....
