Hi Boaters, I usually leave the locking pin out due to it not releasing when placed in gear. I did a visual today and I see the lever with spring is intact and clamps down on the pin when its in. It has a rod with a u shape running thru it and the rod goes up thru the engine , this rod has an appx. quarter inch movement. Outside on bottom engine I can see this is affixed to or rests on a vertical rod that drops down in to gear box or the tube foreward of it. I assume this vertical rod should move releasing the claw clamp on the locking pin?? Phew--tried to explain clearly. This is beyond my skills going down into the gears. In opinions would this be an expensive repair?? I have no problem cruising without the pin- don't need a stump ripping the transom off. Thought Id get it right before I install a CMC T & T unit but no more $$ than needed in an old motot/ Advice input appreciated. Daveydoodle.

Is the washer on top of the shift rod like it should be lot of those don't get replaced when the water pump is serviced. Or the shift rod is not running through the hook. It should release in forward lock in neutral and lock in reverse. If you look between the lower cowling and the steering bracket you can see the shift rod. There should also be a u-shaped hook the shift rod needs to run through that. On the shift rod itself you will see 2 ears there needs to be a washer on top of those.

have to look tomorrow. So this wouldn't be a big deal for a mechanic??? Having the seals and pump impeller done this fall anyway. wishing I had the expertise to DIY.Thanks Flyingscott..I'm figuring on 3 or 4 bills. Good ballpark?

Making sure all that is on should be part of the waterpump service. If you did the water pump yourself you would be amazed how easy it is if you get a good manual.
