My Steering cable has to be original. It's red but the exposed portion where it comes out of the hull to the motor has faded a LOT and over the past few seasons small cracks in the cable housing have formed exposing small rust spots. I have been spraying a little PB in the cracks, drying then applying a little marine grease followed by a wrapping of electrical tape on the bigger cracks.
This year i have a larger fissure where the cable enters the steering assembly on the motor. There is an evident angular bend with steel frays. I lightly sanded the frays, hit it with my PB/Grease/electrical tape dressing but I'm getting a little nervous. The boat still steers fine, i replaced the helm a few years ago. Could this cable snap while i am powering through a rocky inlet? Is the housing really thick? I'm from the school "If it aint broke, don't fix it". Do you think i could get one more season out of it?
