I have a 87 omc 225 with no vro 2 h/p fuel pumps in tandom engine runs wonderfully in driveway with muffs but as soon as some back pressure from putting boat in water it is hard starting and stalls as soon as I give it any throtle. It dies as soon as I put it in gear. compression is = in all cyl, spark tester shows spark in all cyl, new racor filter, carbs are all rebuilt, plugs and wires are new and what OMC calls for I just did a link and sink. it dose have an aftermarket fuel filter on it ( not OMC I think it might be automotive) I will change this and see if it has been restricting flow of fuel. any other Ideas would be appreciated Thanks Eric

Check to see if the timer base moves smoothly without sticking when you advance the throttle. Take the airbox cover off & observe whether the throttle plates are parallel. The timer base should also start it's travel before the throttle plates start to open, otherwise the old girl will die when you give her the juice.

You might want to bypass the shift interupter switch, which is on the starboard side of the engine. It is a common problem with the age of these engines.

If all is well after unhooking it, you have found the problem.

Mine has been missing that switch, long before I bought the boat.

I am having the same problem. I am running a 1979 115 hp Evinrude. I will check the throttle plates and timer base. Thanks.
