87 3.0L mercruiser, dosent idle right

ok all let me give you all the run down. its a 1987 mercruiser 3.0 that is supposed to have a thunderbolt distributerless ignition. For some reason the distributerless part is disonnected, and theres a points distributer installed, while the coil ect for the thunderbolt sits idle and dissconnected. The engine does not run right, very shakey at idle. it really dosent like to idle. I replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and it still didnt help. you can kinda hear a popping noise while its running. does it sound like an issue with the points or the carb? it also has a mercarb 1389-9562 on it. I cant seem to find a rebuild kit for this carb anywhere. all help would be appreciated

Did you set the dwell on the points? Did you reset the timing to specs? did you readjust the idle mixture and idle speed? They all have to be done for it to work correctly.
If it has all been checked and readjusted, do a compression test.

PS: The distributorless system is known as a DDIS (Digital Distributorless Ignition System) Has absolutely nothing to do with the Thunderbolt ignition used on V6 and V8 engines.
