87 3.7 170 mercruiser shift cable

i'v been having trouble putting the boat in reverse when it is in foward. is there any adjustments that i do on the cable or is it somthing else. has anybody had this problem or is it a bad cable. please help

First, simply turn the dial at the end of the cable, where it goes into the engine. Make the bolt that goes to the shift mechinish either longer or shorter by turning the dial. You should see an arm moving slowly while you turn the dial. Try turning it both ways until you can shift into reverse.
I don't think you need a new cable.

Those cables do not suddenly fall out of adjustment. They get wear in the cable from use which allows too much travel in the cable and it can't reach both forward and reverse. You might adjust it and make if for 1 or 2 shifts, but it will fail. That's why you just replace it.

does anyone have the repair manual instructions to replace that cable and any idea on were to purchase the cable.
