87 4.3 distributor cap electrode

Does the center electrode in the distributor cap protrude slightly? Mine is flush to the cap. I thought they were on a spring and could be moved in and out slightly. I'm troubleshooting erratic rpm at any speed.

The carbon "ball" is flat and flush to the inside of the cap so it appears it's worn down. Agreed?

you need a new cap and rotor

For future reference - Before you install the new cap and rotor, press on the carbon button and see if it's spring-loaded. I think you'll find out it is. Every cap I've replaced and I've lost count, has a spring-loaded button.

Everything inside the distributor is kinda rusty so I'm thinking the roughness on the rotor tab sanded down the carbon button.
