Had the boat out 3 days the last weekend and was running with some "extra" relatives on the boat playing around. The boat was getting pushed pretty hard on the 85HP Force in terms of weight in the boat and tube. Getting up to plane to pull a tube was slower then usual with less weight and that makes sense. It was going great until I started feeling an intermittent drop in the engine power. This happened sporadically but did not seem to really get bad or feel like the engine was going to die. Through the day I stopped and it started up no problems at all. The last drop was bigger than the few times before and I did not want to stop so headed back to the dock. It was dropping in power a little but ran all the way back... Let it sit for about 30 min. Decided I did not want to get stranded so I was going to pull it out. The engine started it up to go to the ramp, started like a champ, no issues. So I went out with a couple of kids and ran around no problems at all at close to WOT with "fun" turns and straight with no problems, through the power range of the throttle... Getting late so I still called it a day..

Question is what would cause the drop? Would working the engine pretty hard for an extended time cause this? Maybe it was getting hot and that created the loss of power? Completely Fresh tank of Gas at a 50:1 oil ratio and the primer bulb felt full... At home I pulled the Thermostat and it did not look great but when I tested it it in hot water opened. Figured I will get another one as it is only $30 or so to just know that is not it. I have a "Tell Tale" I put in and it was flowing. As the engine was used, hotter, I noted that the flow took longer to start and that maybe it was not as strong. I have an Impeller kit on the way and it should be here this week to replace the current one.... I had not changed it so it is time anyway..

Can the extra work load and being used hot and hard cause this drop? It did not skip and while running seemed to run smooth until the power drops. I hate to lose confidence but I have a little. Another time it dropped power then started and then died. that was because I foolishly believed that there was a 1/4 tank left based on the fuel gauge. Now I know it reads wrong  which is not the case in this instance..

Any opinions on the power loss.. I think I gave about as much info as I know..

You have a tach? What rpm's are you getting at wot with a regular load? 1-2 adults a kid or big dog(kidding)some gear and 1/2 tank of fuel? Post your results.Do compression test.Check the spark too.Check the fuel pump diaphram. If it's weak or streched it could do that.Post your results and if you find the problem and fix it report that too.J

OK, I have been slowly tracking down the issue with my engine. The weak Tell Tale (I put one on last year thanks to the directions in the forum) after a weekend of running Hard is now running strong with the new impeller kit I put on. Also tested the Thermostat in hot water and it opened fine.

Took it out to the lake and at about 85-90% ran like a dream and pushed my 16.5/17" BR about 30-32mph indicated. Could run like that for a long time. When I pushed it the last little bit, RPM's went up but felt little misses or losses of power... DARNNNNN.. Bring it back a little and again same thing, ran like a dream again.. I don't have a Tach on the boat so I am going by sound but at about 85-90% no problems but when all the way up felt loss of power.

Worried that I have a compression issue, Compression test and find #1 127; #2 130 and #3 130 all is good there, at least it seems good to me. Please correct me if that is wrong. That was with each cylinder at about 5 sec of turnover.

Now I need to test for spark. I need to get a spark tester. I not sure as I have not done this before but looking them up I see an In-Line tester for less then $10 might be the best way? you put a tester between the plug and wire and start the engine? Light tells you it is working.. Is there a better way?

Next step as I see it assuming the spark is good, which I suspect it is, would be to replace the fuel pump as it might not be pumping fully with the WOT and you get more air then needed compared to Fuel. Could that cause the noted power loss issue?

Any way this Forum has been a huge help so if there is more advice let me know.. Off to get tester for spark and then to order a fuel pump kit when I can figure it out as to what the right one is...

When you find out what the correct fuel pump kit is letme know im want to rebuild mine too but allot of different options I am told to pull it then bring it to the local marina and then they will order it but this time of year in New York you have to go to the lake when the weather is good so i dont want to keep the boat down.....I have the same 87 force 85hp so if you could give me an part number and the place you order from I would greatly apprieciate it
