87 Bayliner Bass 17'10'' rebuild rotted interior

I am undertaking the task of pulling all the inner rot out of this boat and rebuilding it. The next few images give you a feel. <br />Steps to go:<br />1. use a dremmel and cut out the remainder of the fiberglass covering the foam (circled yellow)<br />2. use a dremmel to begin cutting the back section (circled red) because there are cracks and i see damage to the wood below<br />3. remove all existing foam<br />4. buy new foam from http://uscomposites.com/foam.html <br />5. fill according to instructions elsewhere on the site (cover, makes holes ever 18", bring front of boat as high as possible, fill first hole, wait, fill second hole)<br />6. reglass/re-epoxy the interior<br /><br />QUESTION:<br />How would I do step 6? <br />What materials / expoy / fiberglass would you suggest?<br />...More questions as the project goes on....<br /><br />/Shaun

Your best bet is to do a bunch more research before you go much farther. Many if not most of the Bayliners of that size and era need both stringers and a transom rebuild. Learn to use the red search at the top of the page. All of your questions have been asked and answered many times.<br /><br />While you are researching your best bet is to TOTALLY determine the extent of the damage. That will allow you to focus on what to do next.

I think the dremal will be overworked! Get a 4-1/3 in angle grinder, your on the right track. <br /><br />A cheap small shop vac is also a godsend when cleaning stuff out. Fiberglass dust is not good to breath. <br /><br />Since you are this deep in....<br />Check for rot everywhere and in the tramsom. Look for black wood. The fiberglass on the stringers also hold moisture in!

Yeah, you should pull the motor and check the transom. You are in this deep, you may as well go all the way. You may find that the transom is not only compromised, but is probably of marginal thickness. Increasing the thickness of the transom gives you more strength, which equals a solid rebuild. That way, if you should so happen to come across that motor that might have a hair more power than the data plate says it should have, you know the structure can handle the extra weight/power. I am not saying to over power, I am just saying you might as well build in some fudge room. Bayliner was obsessed with under powering their boats to keep them inexpensive, but their hull design when properly rebuilt can handle more power. <br /><br />My transom was only a inch thick, with filler between the transom and splashwell. I rebuilt my transom to the maximum 1 5/8th thickness the splashwell allowed for, and the transom is much stronger. I have towed many boats, all or which were larger than mine, with one tow eye, with no sign of distress. If you are going to do this project, do it. You will regret not looking at that transom down the road. Definately get a 4 1/2 inch grinder. The time you will save will offset the expense...Good luck, looks like a fun project boat...
