Hi, i'm new to this forum and to the boat scene as well. I've been reading alot on here and I can tell this is a great and very informative forum. What i have is a 87 Bayliner Capri which i'm in dirt cheap. It was not very well maintained for it sat out in the weather for a while judging by the interior. I'm going to be replacing the floor and interior myself. I love project and fairly decent with tools so i'm confident i'll be ok. I was just wondering if i can get some pointer on doing the floor and where to buy my supplies i'll need. I'm going to being replacing all the floor, stringers, and interior, etc...my biggest worry is the floor. If anyone can point me in the right direction i'd greatly appreciate. Thanks for all the help. Here are some pics of the boat.

Re: 87 Bayliner Capri Resto

lol....

hi bud....welcome to i boats....

the reason i laugh is because that is allmost the identical boat that i am working on at this exact second......the exact same things...the deck...the foam...stringers...the carpet...the upholstery......exactallly....

you dont know me here.....but i kinda know my way around boats a little....

ill post back as soon as i can with pics....but feel free to pm me with any questions and ill post the answers...

one thing very important.....when you start cutting the deck....your gas tank is in the center of the boat....just aft of the ski locker.....DO NOT CUT INTO IT.

look in the ski locker...that is where you will see the main stringers....after you have located them....start your cuts 2 inches out side of the stringer....

this may sound like greek to you right now....but ill explain later.

first thing is first.....just take everything out of the boat including the carpet......dont remove the rear seat boxes yet....or the dog house frame...lets just see whats under there first before we start pulling motors....

cheers

Welcome to iboats! You'll find lots of help here. I don't want to come across as a negative nancy but are you sure you want to put this kind of work into a boat with an obsolete powerplant?

Not many people want to work on OMC's. If it is great shape it should still hold up for you. Good luck with the teardown, its the worst part! It gets better when you build!

OMC has been out of business for many years. OMC I/O's are not fully supported with parts and as was mentioned many mechanics are not interested in working on them.

Well thanks for the heads up. Is there many options on replacing it that's not to extensive. I started it up yesterday and it seems to run good but i would like to weigh my options should something happen. Thanks for the advice.

Well a Cobra drive is probably the best of the worst, if you will, as they are the newest. And by worst I don't mean they were bad drives or anything, again just parts and service issues. What motor is it? If it's a V6 you're probably not in too bad of shape. If it's the 2.3L Ford motor you could be in trouble.

I guess my advice would be to make sure you get the motor and drive 100% good before tearing too much into the interior as you don't want to have a fully restored boat that's missing some obsolete doo-hickey keeping you off the water. Good luck!

It has the 2.3L, lol. Why would that be trouble. I'm just trying to learn as much about it as i can. I greatly appreciate everyone's advice!

Because Ford got out of the marine business even before OMC!! I'm a bit out of my element here as I'm an outboard guy. Throw a post up in the I/O repair section and ask if there are any particular issues with that setup that you should be aware of. There ARE guys in there who will swear they have no issues getting parts for OMCs. So your mileage may vary.

Re: 87 Bayliner Capri Resto

Well i got the seats and carpet pulled out today and pretty much guessed at what the floor was gonna look like. It's pretty rotted all the way through. The only good spots were around the motor. The stringers look like they are in pretty good shape. Any suggestions on if i should replace them or use them? I've heard Bayliner did good protecting the stringers but just wasn't sure on what to do. Here's some pics.

Good luck on your project. I have a 87 Bayliner with a outboard so the setup is a bit different than the I/O's but I am restoring mine now also and just about complete.

Lots of time and money, have fun and welcome to Iboats.

Thanks, i've enjoyed working on it so far. The teardown sucks but i can't wait to start building it back up! I think i'm going to do a few things different but not sure what yet. I'll wait till i'm to that point to decide. lol

Good luck with it. We have an '88 Capri in the family with 5.0 Cobra, so far no trouble finding parts for it(but it's a different setup than you have). Of course parts cost a little more than a Mercruiser, but they haven't been too bad. Keep working and posting pics. :)

Re: 87 Bayliner Capri Resto

Thanks, I found a OMC repair manual (615 pages!) and downloaded it and i've been researching and i think i'll be ok on finding parts. My dad's friend is gonna rewire the motor (it has alot of old wiring) and get it running top notch when i get to that point. I'll def keep posting updates and pics!
