I have an 87 Bayliner 17 ft. that someone put a 72 65HP Johnson with electric drive on. Can I use the tach that is on the dash and if so how would I connect it? The speed indicator works but I am aware that it is different. None of the other gauges are hooked up. Has a fuel gauge, but is for a tank that is built in, is now on a portable tank. Still working on making the engine run right. Thanks!

I'm assuming the original engine on your Bayliner was a Force. Force's used different tachs. I could certainly be wrong, but my guess would be your existing tach won't work with the Johnson. Now if your tach has an adjustable pole setting.....

Thanks for the reply. Not really sure what engine was originally on it. The transom had a 75Hp Johnson tag but found out it was wrong, however the transom tag may not be the original. I don't think the tach is adjustable but will need to get under the dash again. I'm new to outboards and not sure where a tach would connect to the engine. The manual I have doesn't show one. Nice looking boat and got a heck of a deal on it but can't seem to get it running right. Want to go through the engine this winter and be able to use it in the spring. Was trying to upload a pic. of my $700 find but can't seem to figure it out yet. Thanks again Leont

The tach might work if it has adjustable pole settings on the back. If I recall correctly, a 65hp has 3 cylinders. If so, check for a dial on the back of the tach. Set it to 6P. If the motor is 2 cylinders, set it to 5P.
