i have an 87 evinrude with console trim switch and engine cowling trim switch. no troubles indicated until i was loading boat on the trailer and motor would not go up or down with either switch. fluid level is good, batteries are fully charged, opened cover to relays and as cowling switch is activated in either direction i can feel the relays click. i can hear the d/c motor trying to spin/making slight noise. a couple of times while switch is held in up position the engine went up an inch or so. thats about it. any and all ideas will be helpful as the specks are biting and im jonesin' to get to them.

castneter,
I,m not sure if your motor is equipped with this, but check anyway. On the tilt/steering tube going through the motor bracket there may be a trim limiter switch? The clip that makes contact with the switch may have moved on you....

If your motor is running make sure your release valve is tight.

Castneter..... The electric motor on that PTT is a dual polarity motor, meaning that if it operates in one direction, it will most certainly operate in the opposite direction.

There are only two wires leading to that electric motor. Trace the wires back from that motor and find the electrical connector and disconnect it. Run two small jumper wires from the battery, or a battery terminal, to those two wires (positive to one wire, negative to the other wire).

If the electric motor operates, obviously the problem lies elsewhere. However, if it does not run, the electrical motor is faulty and will require replacing.

It's always possible that you simply have a corroded or loose cable connection somewhere, but the above test is a good place to start.

i checked the switches and connections (replaced the dash switch since i was in there anyway), the release valve is tight, all looks good but still not down movement. it did raise somewhat but very slow and not very much. i guess ill have to bite the bullet and spring for a new motor. thanks for all the ideas! castneter
