Hi I have a 87 evinrude xp 150 on my 87 baja sunsport 184 and I have problems getting it started. Takes about 20 cranks to get her running sometimes I have to have someone prime it while I start it now its getting 2 the point where its draining the battery b4 It gets started. I'm about to start working on it now and was wanting some opinions on what it could be. I already bought a vro pump but havnt installed yet I was also planning on getting a new prime bulb and fuel line and cleaning out the oil reservior the runs up to the vro pump. After I get it started it runs good only 40 mph full throttle but I think it may just need different prop for that only happens after itsbeen a while since last start if I got it started and turned it off wait a min it usually fires right back up.... any suggestions would be appreciated thanks jared..

Start with a basic health check.
Compression
Spark
Fuel delivery
Spark plug condition

Go from there.
Post as much history of your outfit as possible. Is this motor new to you ??? has it always been like this ??? and as many circumstances and history as possible. The more information you can give the better the responses will be.

Yes this motor is new to me I know no history of it. When I bought it he fired it right up so it hasn't always been like this I did put in new plugs also. Thanks

Kenny is right on, ya have to know where you stand.
Forcing the issue when it doesn't want to cooperate can damage it.

Kenmy is correct. Do all the basics with more info and you will get better answers. We have to know what is going on and what you have checked.

Did you get the factory "operators manual" with the motor? Using the correct starting procedure is a good place to start. I'm sure the manual would say to use the choke when starting a cold motor, so MAKE SURE it is operating CORRECTLY and use it.

Your top speed appears to be a little slow but could be due to other variables. I had a 1988 Evinrude 150HP on a 19 1/2 ft Chaparral bowrider (fairly heavy boat for its size) and mine would do 45-46 with me alone on a perfectly flat lake.

Your load, prop type, condition and pitch/diameter,.....actual boat weight, hull configuration etc could make differences.

And mine was before the days of GPS so I was just using a regular speedometer set-up.

Check the fuel primer solenoid to make sure it is pumping fuel when you turn the key switch to on, and push in on the key. Possible it is not working and that will make it nearly impossible to start when cold. You can prime the fuel hose, then pull the small hose of the top of the top carb, then push in on the key switch. You should get fuel pulsing out fo the small hose.

I agree with the starting procedure things here but we have just found out that this is a "new to him" outfit.
I still say the basics need checking out and at the very least a new impeller and lower unit oil change.

Definately, go through everything, don't buy an unknown condition and run the snot out of it until everything is checked out.
Compression.
oil change
water pump
clean/lube prop shaft
test on the water hose , run at idle only, no more than 1500rpm.
I would rebuild carbs if it were mine.
If it runs ok, check the alarm system by the book and put it in the water, see how it goes.
