We finally figured out the sputtering. The foam sound insulation was the culprit! It had been deteriorating badly, and we found bits of it in the carb. We removed what was left of the insulation, scrubbed the motor cover clean, ran some Autozone carb cleaner through the carb while running, and now she's running lilke new again! Back on the water, life is good.
