Good Morning, My 87 Johnson 225hp (2.7 liter) Seadrive seems to be having a bit of a problem with mid range running (2100 to 2600 RPM) and also coming off a neutral idle into gear. This engine is on a 25 Wellcraft Sportsman, which is a rather big and heavy for a single screw. It has had these problems since I have owned it (Three years) but recently they are getting worse.
The 2100 to 2600 RPM problem is a stumble and miss with the engine running rough as heck and dropping several hundred rpms to practically stalling if I do not get out of this RPM band. The hull is in at a low transaction plane speed so there is a lot of drag.
The idle stall when going into gear occurs if I do not allow the engine to warm up or on hot restarts if I do let it idle for a minute or two prior to putting it into gear.
I have 90 to 100 psi compression on all cylinders, good plug color, good spark and clean carbs with a water separation (Racor) fuel filter system. Engine runs great otherwise.
One thing, these problems have become several magnitudes worse since I have had to go to ethanol fuel.
Even my local marina uses ethanol so I am having a hard time finding non-ethanol fuel. Any help would be appreciated.
