Here is some background on how my 87 Johnson 90HP VRO has been behaving. No problem starting, idling, or low speed. I usually drive the boat about once a week for an hour or so. When i try to go on plane for the first time (W.O.T), i feel full power initially for a second or two then about 80% power. This will last the remainder of the time i am out. Previously (beginning of season)it would feel like it was cutting out on me (that exchange between 100% and 80% power). I would be at full throttle and you could hear the engine dip back and forth, then it would settle at about 80 percent power. It seems once the engine heats up, full power is gone. Here's what i have done to the boat so far. Compression check good, New fuel filters, water sep, plugs, carb kits and tune up. Could this be related to the spark plug wires? I did have a rare occurance a few weeks back where the boat ran like a champ the whole time. It had sat for two weeks and it was a cool day. The weird thing was, it seemed to have a worse idle, but ran W.O.T with no problem for over an hour. The next week, same thing... initial surge then 80%..HELP!!! Can't figure out if this is fuel or spark? Supposedly a spark test was done and it was good, but i'm not sure i believe in it.

It sounds like you are dropping a cylinder.

What do the spark plugs look like? Is one real clean looking?

Dropping a cylinder how? The compression check came back good. Could this be the the cylinder not getting gas or spark?

jokeman,

It can drop a cylinder for one of both reasons-spark and fuel.

Again, does one of the spark plugs look real clean?

Will need to go down to the boat and check. Not until the weekend.

I've heard alot of stories about the coils being an issue? If so, how easy are they to get to and replace?

Also to answer the question, one spark plug on the cylinder is question was discolored.

They are sitting right on the cylinder heads-attached to the spark plug wires.

I was thinking of new coils and new wires. Does this sound like a good start?

The power packs or "coils" aren't cheap. You may need to replace that one. The wires are a solid-core type and usually outlast the boots. You can check for resistance with a ohmmeter. Should be near zero. I made a home-made sparktester from a spare plug, a 2' length of 16 gauge wire and a small hose clamp. It's important to ground the base of the plug to the motor to prevent damaging the power packs. Hope you don't mind a rookie with insomnia giving advise DJ.

Okay, finally got down to the boat this weekend. I checked the plugs, they all look the same, color wise. A little wet with oil, (i guess this is normal?) I did the squeeze ball test, ran WOT and had a friend pump the bulb at the same time, no surge in the engine. Starting to rule out a fuel delivery problem. I pulled the wires off to inspect them and noticed a black grease like substance in the boot and on the connectors of the coil packs, is this normal? Are the boots melting perhaps and this is a rubber residue? Please help!

I have a 1990 120hp johnson with the same problem.I was just wondering if you found out what the problem was.

The boot is lubricated to aid in assembly.

It also helps with disassembly.... stops the plug wires from sticking (coroding) on to the plugs.

jokeman - You can throw parts and money at it if you like but might be a good idea to troubleshoot first to find out if you are buying the right stuff.

First I would run it with a seperate 6 gal tank filled with pre mix to get a sense of wheter you may be oil starved from the VRO. Next perform a spark test to see if if the spark wil jump at least 1/2".

Symptoms point to fuel delivery problem at this point.

Did you do the work you listed or did you have a shop do it? If a shop I would have them fix it as a warranty repair. You paid to get a good running motor - it dosen't!

Re: 87 Johnson VRO 90HP W.O.T issues.

I had most of the work done by a reputable mechanic. I just figured putting a fresh set of wires on it (they were cheap enough). I had the whole fuel system serviced, with no fix. (cleaned out fuel tank, new lines, water separator and filter, check ball to motor, and squeeze ball.) I was starting to lean towards ignition. My mechanic said their was good spark and cylinders are all 120 compression check. VRO does work, the siren for low/no oil works too initially if i forget to prime the oil. I'm really coming to a dead end here.

Report from the boat. All spark plugs same color. Feels like she runs about 4500 rpm rather than the 5500 rpm it's supposed to. Also, the few times it did run right, it sounds smoother, quieter.
