Buy a manual for your engine.
It will give you what you are looking for
You can get one HERE

Note: Using all capital letters is interpretted by those reading that you are SHOUTING.

Until you get a manual, you are kind of out of luck as far as actual diagnosis. You can cheat a bit and try swapping the switchboxes around. Make sure that you change all of the wires and that they are grounded well. Then look to see if you have spark on the opposite side. You really do need a manual to do the job properly though.

Good Luck!

The V6 engines have a problem with there plug lead connectors, remove the green wire from each of the coils (one at a time). Get a multimeter and set it to low ohms, the resistance from the terminal that the green wire was on and the spark plug lead terminal should be around 900 ohms. If it's not pull the plug lead out of the coil pack and measure from there, if its ok there its the lead, if its not its the coil (unlikely). If both check out ok, suspect a module.

Greg

Re: 87' mariner 150

Thanks for the info guys. Here is some of the results on the troubleshooting I done. Orignally there was no fire on cylinders 2,4,6 and fire on 1,5. #3 was dead also. After looking at the site Trent sent me to and following some of the steps listed I tried the following. I swapped the red and red/white wires going to the packs along with the blue and blue/white wires. The problem moved with #2,4 firing, 6 was dead and no fire on #1,3,5. Then I swapped the coil wire for #6,4.#4 died , #6 fired. I then swapped trigger wire #2,6 #6 fired , #2 dead. After replacing all wires I ohmed trigger wires out .Here are the results,

yellow sleeve black sleeve
brown-----------------purple 1286
white-----------------white 3.26meg
purple----------------brown 1271

Here are the readings for the bias to ground.
left bank 14.86k
right bank 15.14k
from what I have checked it looks like I need a trigger and stator. If any of you experts have any other info or diagnosis please feel free to let me know especially if I'm headed in the wrong direction. Also what are the chances of both of these devices going out at once and what could cause this?

Jimmy
