now that we know this is an 87. are these timer bases known to go bad? I work on a lot of evinrude motors but this is a friends mariner and i told him i could prolly fix it. Symptoms are no fire on any plugs with kill wire disconnected. I assume timer base is bad based off my omc experience. Plus the timer base has a brownish wire that is dust all the way to the pack. no good wire to splice to to even try that.

Here is the parts list for your s/n:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/335.cfm

Crumbling wires are a well known condition and if you can't repair them at least for test purposes, not much choice but to replace. You will see the trigger as item 10 under Flywheel, Ignition Coil and Switch Box.

Here is a link to a condensed version of the service manual which may help you if you don't have the OEM manual;

http://web.ebscohost.com/serrc/pdf?...90cf-260242e1db5d@sessionmgr110&vid=4&hid=126

Let the page load for several seconds and download soonest to your computer as the link is short lived.

thanks again gerry. Since that one wire was shot from end to end, i went ahead and got him another trigger coming this morning. Even if that part is not the problem, he needs a new one anyway because that wire was toast all the way into the epoxy and i didnt feel like trying to grind and dig down in the just to see if i had any good wire left.
