Hello Fellow Boaters!
Well I'm running out of ideas on this one. Picked up an 86 Trophy with an OMC out drive and a blown motor. Swapped in an 87 5.7 GM Marine engine that had a slightly modded cam and electronic ignition system.
Engine runs great for a few trips then randomly dies one day on the lake. Not getting spark. Read through every forum I could get my hands on and ended up just shotgunning parts at it out of frustration. Replaced the following:
Pertronix Flame Thrower Pickup
Pertronix Rotor
Pertronix Cap
Pertronix Flame Thrower Coil
Starter Assist Solenoid
Starter Solenoid
Tether Kill Stwitch
Ignition Switch

After replacing these items I tried starting it. Nothing. So for who knows what reason I pulled the kill switch tether and it ran. Set the timing, let it run for probably 30 minutes and it purred. Idling perfect around 500.
Next day we take it to the lake and dump it in the water. Starts right up (with tether pulled on kill switch of course) and runs perfect. I cruise around the no wake zone for a few minutes waiting to pick my buddy up from the dock. Pick up my buddy and head out. Make it about an eighth of a mile, just get up on plane and it died.
I've disconnected every Guage on the dash cluster, verified voltage at the coil, checked the 50A fuses, every other fuse I can find and they are all good.
I jumped from the positive terminal on the battery to the positive on the coil while someone cranked. No change. I eliminated the run circuit to verify that wasn't grounding out voltage somewhere. No change. Unplugged ESA with no change. Disconnected alternator. No change.
The only thing I could think of that had changed before issues started was th installation of a solar charging panel and a Panther steering assembly on the kicker motor. As a long shot I disconnected both of those systems. As soon as I did... Wala it started again. I shut it off and connected water muffs. Starts right back up with no issue. Runs for about 3 minutes and died again. I'm back to nothing.
Any ideas where to go from here?

The only thing I can suggest is according to Prestolite their system is not compatible with OMC‘s esa shift system. Try reinstalling the original Prestolite points and condenser. Also try connecting a volt meter to the + side of the coil while running the boat to see if there are any voltage changes.

If it still has the original ESA module, and you're running a Petronix electronic conversion, that ESA is not compatible, not sure it will keep it from starting though. I think the issue with that is it won't function like it should (lower the idle when shifting from in-gear to neutral).
CDI Electronics in Alabama sells ESAs that work with electronic ignition
I'm wondering though if this has to do with your neutral safety switch or the cut off lanyard switch. Pulling it made the engine start right? Right there that's suspicious.

Run points and properly service them

Throw the pertronix in the waste bin along with any clymer or Haynes manual
