My OMC side mount controller needs to be replaced. Can I just switch to a dual control? One for the gear shift and one for the throttle?

Won't this make adjusting the controls easier?

Thanks in advance for your help.

I am NOT a pro but I did replace my old OMC control with a Teleflex CH-1700.

With a recreational sterndrive (or any) boat I wouldn't want a single control.
They were great with 60's outboards I guess (because they were all "split")............ I don't see an advantage in a split control.

Re: 87 OMC Cobra shifter

I have used both systems.

Splitting the controls makes it harder to operate the boat. Especially while docking. You frequently need one hand for throttle, one for gear shift, and one hand for steering.

Having combined controls allows the boat to be operated easily by people who only have two hands.

Regarding adjusting; all the documentation that you would follow to perform the adjustments is written for combined controls. The system was designed for combined controls. Assuming you will follow these procedures, then it should be easier to have the same set up as documented in these procedures.

Cheers
Chris
