I have a 1987 150 mercury blackmax, and I am now having problems with my tilt/trim. I went to make sure it was all the way down, and when I hit the button to go down, it didnt make any noise, nor move what so ever. When I hit it to go up, it clicks then starts moving extremely slow, and I noticed that the hose, and 1 of the small post the black box was extremely hot..

So my question is, what is causing this? A wire come loose, solenoid ,or engine burnt up or what?
Also, can the solenoid go bad an make the "down" stick causing the motor to go bad?

Thanks in advance

Re: 87 Tilt and Trim problem

I'm having problems with my tilt/trim as well. I replaced the trim motor (I knew it was bad) and once it was installed, my engine trimmed up but won't come down.

My limited knowledge would advise this.....

First, check to make sure you have adequate fluid.
Next, check wiring and connections on your engine.
Replace cylinoids as they are cheap.
If your trim engine is bad, check online for a new one. I bought mine for $167.00.

Re: 87 Tilt and Trim problem

It's actually pretty simple. One motor, two power circuits to it, each controlled by it's own solenoid, and each of those controlled by it's own contact on the trim switch.

A bad motor will draw too much current, which would likely take out a solenoid because they aren't the huskiest around by far.

Start by getting a diagram from the manual, and then troubleshoot with voltmeter and amp gauge in hand.

hope it helps
