I pulled my heads off and on the bottom of the cylinders there seems to be some minor wear running the whole length, looks like just rub marks due to being on the bottom. Anyone ever seen this, can it run as is. And pistons look fine. Last time I checked compression, they were all fine around 115 to 120.

I guess I would just like to know, do the cylinders have to be perfect, I am hoping to buy a new boat in a year or two, and dont want to spend a fortune on a 22 year old motor.

Chad, if it aint broke don't fix it. Why did you pull the heads? Compression aint the best but it should run fine. A few scratches after 22 years aint nothing.

While you have access to the pistons, I'd take this opportunity to spray with Deep Seafoam the rings to loosen and clean

Re: 88 150hp Black Max Cylinder Wear

I pulled the heads, due to the fact that I pulled the powehead to replace all base gaskets, attempting to fix an ongoin overtemp problem. Just figured since I had the gaskets, I would pull them to make sure there was no debris in the cooling ports. But, after some research last night, seems these engines appear to run hot due to actual head temp. and not water temp. But, I will still feel better covering all the bases as far as the cooling goes. Thanks for your replies, I am going to run it as it is, should be fine.

The temp sending unit reads the head temp not water temp. If it is setting off thw temp warning buzzer make sure you solve that problem before you do real damage. While you have the power head off go ahead and replace popit. I.d put in new thermostats, temp sending unit, rebuild the water pump and check the water supply tube and seals. That will cost very little and go along way toward many more years of service out of your motor.

Good Luck

I have already replaced all the above items, and just went through the water pump again, just to be sure. My temp. alarm has never gone off, I have tested the horn and it works, but have not verified the temp. switch for it, guess I should while the heads are off. Temp. usually runs 180 to 190 at wot.
