Some of the manuals posted wouldn't load on my W98 even though it said it was downloading.

Both solenoids click, so I asume they are all right. The unit is in the up position so I jumped the green/white wire and it didn't go down.

There are 4 screws going up into the motor and two going into the pump. So which ones do I remove to separate them for testing?

What is a trailer switch for?

Thank you.

just to clear this up:
J1171 is the SAE test spec for electrical components in marine applications for spark/explosion proofing etc...

I think you are working on the trim motor/ pump which would have that J1171 sticker on it... most do...

trailer switch, pushed in conjunction with UP switch, bypasses the trim limit switch so you can continue to raise the drive higher than the trim will take it (setting of trim limit switch)
Jumped the green/white wire to what?

12V+?

if the ground is good (and it may not be), then the motor should've run, so yeah...probably brushes and commutator issue...tapping the motor with a wrench to make it go can verify that issue sometimes....

testing is done before any disassembly.

I used a 12V meter between g/w wire and ground, than tried the down switch. That was a mistake as they usually go to ground. It should have went to the black wire terminal on the down solenoid terminals. Will have to do that one again.

Haven't tried smacking the motor yet. The old standby method.

This outfit has been sitting for 6 or so years. Quite a project.

Guess what, after I tapped it with a hammer the motor started running. I ran a jumper wire from the blue wire to the 110 and it went up, jumped from green to 110 and it went down.

Then I remembered two plug in wires came appart in that little matchbox next to the controls. I switched them around till it went up and down with the switch. That's why it woul go up but not down.

It's great when something comes together.

Now the trailer switch doesn't work. Does the up/down switch have to be pushed at the same time?

If the wacking really got it running than the brushes are BAD or stuck and it generaly will stop again in the near future ;)
