88 classic 50 no fire on top 2 cylingers

my classic 50 ( or 45hp 4cyl) lost spark on the top 2 cylinders.bottom 2 are fine.after getting hosed by my local dealer twice for and hour labor each time to check my stator for output a few months back, i would like to check this my self.what somewhat inexpensive multimeter do you recommend and as far as i can tell i need a peak reading meter ?.and will also need a dva adapter? .i want to be able to check the ignition system.also i have a merc factory manual but it does not show a thing on voltage testing only ohms.is their a ignition manual for wire colors / voltage values etc? the motor history is motor lost all spark found bad stator .replaced and it ran great for 3 months now lost spark on top 2 cylinders and did ohms checks on stator ,trigger etc .all ok

Check your trigger. Disconnect the White/Black and brown wires at the switch box. Check with an Ohm meter. You should have 800 - 1400 Ohms. If you have a DVA meter the voltage should be 4v+. Do the same with the White and purple wires.
