Re: '88" Evinrude 15hp Gear Oil???

Hey Alex....ain't no big thing.

Look for the two Large screws on the lower unit. They will take a large common screw driver. The upper one is the vent and the lower is the drain/fill screw.

Set the engine straight up and down so the all the oil will drain out the drain screw. Set the engine so the gear case is level. Remove the drain screw and and vent screw and drain the old gear lube into a clean container. What you are looking for is milky looking oil which would tell you that you are getting water into the lower unit or sparklers or pieces of metal that would tell you that your gearing is starting to go bad.

To refill, fill from the bottom up until the gear lube comes out the vent hole and replace the vent screw first. Quickly remove the fill tube and replace the drain plug. It's always a good idea to replace the vent and drain plug washers when ever you change out the gear lube.

How often you change out the gear lube will depend on how much you use the engine. If the engine is used heavily, check/change the lube once a month. This is cheap insurance.

That's it. Yer done. Don't hesitate to post any question you might have....thanks.

Sure, use one of those tools you hit with a hammer and gives terrific turning torque. Can't remember the tool name, but I've had one for years. Use it with the largest bit that fits the screw head. If the head gets mangled, get a new screw.

My trusty 1/2" standard with a 3' shaft always cracks those lu screws in a jiffy :)

The following will help with the gear oil change, although OBJ was extremely thorough in his explanation. Sometimes pictures speak a thousand words.
