I just found an 88 Evinrude 55 on an old boat that's been sitting outside since 2000. The guy has to get rid of it before he moves to an apt. and wants $500.oo. He said it ran fine in 2000. A good buy if the engine is any good. I want to take my muffs and try to get it started. Any ideas what I should look for? Would it be worth fixing if it won't start? Will I be able to find controls for this motor and how expensive will they be? Thanks

I really wouldnt try to start it unless you go thru the carbs first. If one is plugged and it does start on the other, the plugged one is not feeding oil to that cylinder.

Just do the normal pre-buying stuff. Check compression, spark and lower unit oil. If those are good then you - most likely - have a good base to work with.
