I have a couple of questions on a possible purchase of a 1989 Evenrude motor. It belongs to my brother in law, who actually knows less than me. He bought it, I took him out once, he hasn't had it out since. It has a large "88" on the back of the motor cover, is that the H.P? I have always had older Mercs, and I've heard of 80, 85 and 90, but never 88. He's out of state, so I don't have access to the serial #.

Are there any inherant problems with this year, and model motor that you know of? Can I easily get parts needed?

I've officially sworn off Mercs,(could never get parts, constant electronic problems) but have never owned anything else.

Thanks

The 88 is the same as the 90 hp. There were some styling differences and the trim, in the beginning, was an option. Dont ask -- it was a marketing decision.

Its a very good motor. A time proven crossflow design. That basic design was used from 1973 until the late 90's. Every V4 crossflow from 1979 has a ton of parts that interchange. It should serve you well.

Good luck!

The "88" Evinrude is a very good engine, One of the better that they made. The "88" is basically a 90 HP engine, but is designated as "88" and is called an 88 "special", meaning it's really just a somewhat stripped down version of the 90 HP Model. Might not have tilt and trim or oil injection, unless the original buyer added them. Parts are readily available through any J/E dealer or online. I know of no inherent problems with this motor. My sis-in-law has one and it has run flawlessly for 7 years...

thanks for the input. This one does have tilt and trim, but no automatc oil mixing. I've never had tilt/trim, are there any secrets to keeping that system working and happy?

It sure sounds good so far. I may just make him an offer tonight.

Thanks again.

Not really. Just make sure the fluid level is up to the top of the fill hole and grease all the fittings you can find. Especially on the tilt tube. When you trailer the boat, get a transom saver to relieve the stress on the lower unit. Keeps it from bouncing and putting stress on the hydraulics and the transom itself. That's about all you need to do...

Transom saver:

web page
