1988 J150 My starter would click a few times but would turn over every time never had to beat on it or anything like that. But to avoid any future problems I purchased a new starter and replaced it and figured I would rebuild the old one new brushes and ect as my spare. However even after the new starter the first time out it actually was worse. It started a few test time in the yard. Started fine at the ramp. Then we went out watching some fire works went to start to get in and nothing due to the noise of the fire works and other boats around me I couldn't tell or hear if the new starter was even clicking. So if two starters fair I will assume its a bad solenoid and I just ordered a new one to replace it. Now I want to rebuild me old starter as a backup I am not convinced the starter was actually even bad but while its out and its pretty old atleast 13 years so I figured Id just go ahead and rebuild it new brushes ect. Now I notice shop.evinrude has a Damper Pad Repair kit.
But doesn't define what all is in the kit and no other descriptions for the other parts identify a damper. Any one familiar with this kit?

Would the kit include every thing needed for a standard rebuild i.e. brushes, springs and typical wearable parts or should I get the specific parts I know need changing brushes, brush springs?

The OMC Number for this damper kit is
0387735DAMPER PAD REPAIR KIT
what I have written down is OMC number 0385952 - brush and spring kit that's all I was going to go with unless any one can suggest a few other things to replace while im there or if any one knows if that Damper Pad Repair Kit will cover all I need to do a rebuilt.

Thank you in advance!

Lots of starters get replaced due to bad starter solenoids. See how the new starter works when the new solenoid is installed. When you get the old starter apart, check the commutator end of the stator. If it look smooth and un burnt, that's good. I clean out all the old carbon black residue (there will be a lot.) Use some white lithium grease on the bearing ends of the armature. Install new brushes/springs. Reassemble.
