Hey all,

I have a 88 110hp Johnson that wont start unless I manually open the carbs. Any ideas? I just redid the carbs on it so I know they are clean.

A couple of questions...
Was it running / starting before you re did the carbs?
Did you fiddle with any other adjustments?
Once it does start does it run well?

No, not unless I manually opened carbs then also, thats why I thought the carbs needed cleaned.

Didnt fiddle with anything.

Yes once it starts it will idle fine.

It sounds like it's getting too much fuel at start up. Is this somthing that just started happening?

The backfiring just started today,. other than that the engine never turned over unless you opened the carbs manually with the lever on the motor.

I wonder if the primer solenoid is acting up. It's the item at the front, top starboard side with the red lever on it. the lever should run parallel with the body of the primer. Try pinching off the fuel supply to the primer and prime the cold engine manually with a little bit of premixed fuel directly into the carb throats, a fuel proof spray bottle would be ideal for the manual prime.

When I push the key in it is making a clicking sound. I also noticed when I turn the red lever (I red it was for manual priming) it is leaking fuel.

Is the fuel primer solenoid working? (the choke)

Well I tested the solenoid and it was reading good. I took it apart and noticed the filter was in wrong, it was on the bottom when it should have been on the top.

I put it back together and it still isnt firing but it isnt backfiring anymore either.

The primer solenoid makes a popping sound when I push the key in (electric choke) but it isnt doing anything. ( like when I push the key in, it pops one time)

Pull the tiny fuel primer hose off the top carb. Pump up the fuel hose bulb. Turn the key to on, and push it in. You should normally see fuel pulsing out of that hose. If it's not pulsing, you have no choke.

Yes gas is coming out of the little hose when I do that. Sounds like it wants to start but dont.

Backfiring through the carb may mean that it is out of time. It usually won't start when this happens. Most common way for these engines to get out of time is for the flywheel key to shear. You'll have to pull the flywheel to check the key.

It backfires through the prop and it does start if I manually open the carbs.

It may run with a sheared flywheel key, but it won't make power. How does it run when you have it on the water at WOT?
