Hi there and i appreciate you guys out there helping out everyone. I joined today and saw a lot of useful things.

Issue: I am not able to get my Johnson to suck water into itself and tried spraying water down the 2 hoses where they go into the engine and was using rabbit ears to provide me water. I cannot get the bottom end of the motor off. Maybe i am missing something. Let me know what yall think.
thanks,
Shaun

Welcome to the forum. The first thing I would suggest is that you buy a manual for this motor. It will take you through the steps necessary to fix most problems. I prefer OMC, rather than aftermart manuals, because they're more specific to the motor. I don't believe I'd try this job without a manual unless I'd done it before. Good luck.

You need a manual, but.

There are several things that are critical in your cooling system

1. Water pump. Buy an OEM KIT only.

2. Thermostats and poppets.

3. Deflectors.

The water pump is on top of the lower unit. The lower unit is removed by:

1. Making sure all bolts are removed. That includes the one under the trim tab (fin over prop). The shift linkage is disconnected. It is under the bottom carburetor and is most accesseble while the engine is in reverse.

Thermostats/poppets

These are under a manifold that is at the bottom rear of the engine block. They are in the housing that the two water hoses you mentioned are connected to. They are NOT easy to get at but repalcing them is just tedious.

Deflectors.

These are little rubber deflectors under the cylinder heads that direct water flow. If the engine overheated, they are probably bad/gone.
Cylinder head R & R is pretty straightforward.

Get a manual here: It's the BEST $30.00 you'll ever spend.

http://www.outboardrepairs.com/manuals/
