88 merc 3.0 - Gas pooling in carb

I have an 88 merc 3.0 and Alpha 1 and it runs pretty good. After it is warmed up or out for a run and I shut it off I can see gas going into the throat on top of the butterflies. Not gushing or anything but flooding for sure. Of course then to start it I have to pretty much bury the throttle. Also, it loads up on idle and eventually stalls, 30 seconds or so. I do have a new fuel pump and a rebuilt carb last year. Always had this problm, though. Could it be as simple as vapor lock or float level? I have seen this in other posts but did not see the solution except for VL. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Howdy,

I would look at the float level first.

Yep, what he said. 2 years ago I rebuilt my carb on my 89 3.0L and when I test ran on the hose and then again in the lake the exact same thing happened, and it was in fact the float level. The float is not rising enough to shut off the incoming fuel flow, so all you need to do is pop off the top plate of the carb and I think bend the tange that the float is on.
There is a means to measure the float drop or float level but if I'm not mistaken it was a little unclear. I used a Napa rebuild kit and the directions in that kit differed from the Merc manual.
It might take you a couple tries but gurarenteed that will fix it.
Oh, it could also be a peice of shmutz stuck up between the needle and seat so while your in there clean that out.

If your not up for the carb rebuild try tapping the side of the float bowl housing on the carb it could be stuck or the float could be saturate and filling with fuel.
