Am I correct in saying that if I wanted to check the transom shift cable for binding all I do is disconnect it from the shift lever and push/pull while someone rotates the prop? (It's the red version ... whew!)
I measured the magic 7-5/8" length and got 7-3/8" so it probably needs adjusting. Assuming the cable runs freely, can the length be adjusted with the outdrive still attached?
Seems like it could be since all you're doing is changing the length at the engine end (I'm trying to avoid pulling the outdrive unecessarily) and the instructions for the final shift cable setup on the "Stuart site" are done with the outdrive in place.
Also, are these cables constructed like bicycle cables with a moveable wire core that slides within a fixed outer sheath?

EXCTAMUNDO! THE CABLE IS JUST A WIRE IN A SHEATH. TO ADJUST THE LENGTH THEY TELL YOU TO CUT IT AT THE MOTOR END, WHEN I REPLACE MINE(88 4.3 OMC) THE LOWER UNIT POTION WAS COMPLETELY FIXED AND ALL ADJUSTMENT IS AT THE TOP END.
GOOD LUCK WRITE BACK IF YOU NEED MORE. :p

Thanks! I'll keep you posted. Once I clean up the water in the oil problem (see my other post about the wayward transom drain plug)I'll see what can be done.
