Finally took her out on the lake for the first time after tweaking the engine for most of the summer. Starts and runs fine in neutral, and the drive engages fine in my driveway on muffs.

In the water, though, the engine stalls immediately when I put it in gear, forward or reverse. Sometimes, if I'm really quick and give it throttle right as I put it in gear, I can get it to stay alive. (I know this risks damaging the outdrive.) I was able to do this once today, kept it alive, and ran at about 2000 RPMs around the lake for about 30 minutes. Any higher RPMs, she sputters and dies, and the same if I try RPMs much lower than 1800.

I'm pretty frustrated. New (professionally rebuilt) Quadrajet carb, new plugs and wires, new cap & rotor, new coil. Dwell and timing good. New impeller and water pump. Newer fuel pump. New fuel filter/water separator.

What's next? I'm all for putzing with vehicles, but at this point, I just want to put her in the water a couple of times before the season is over!

Suggest looking into the fuel system, and my guess is the carb. See if the carb is flooding

agreed, there are a few tricks to the Quadrajet rebuild, one is the proper placement of the clip for the needle valve, it does NOT go in the hole(s) in the float hinge arm or else it will cause flooding (sticking needle) the other is getting the idle air tubes clean, it takes soaking in carb cleaner and really cleaning them with high pressure compressed air (comp air can will not do it you need at least a hot dog style electric compressor)….
