We're having major problems repair/replacing our "88 outdrive. We've got the King Cobra 460, its on a 1988 Four Winns 24.5. Hit some rock July 3rd. Boats been out of commission since.

Repair shop thought they found rebuilt lower unit in Florida but it didn't pan out.
Apparantly we have the transitional outdrive - not too many were made.

Does anyone know if there is anyway to replace the whole outdrive (upper/lower) without replacing the engine - (Ford 460 340hp.

As soon as anyone hears King Cobra, we're out of luck. Does anyone have any suggestions?
We knew we were taking a chance with the OMC when we bought the boat, but never thought it would be this hard to repair.
Thanks,

Re: 88 OMC King Cobra problems

There is a way to convert it to a Volvo SX drive, it is going to cost more than if you could have replaced the Cobra but that way at least you will have something most shops will work on.
check out
www.marinepartsexpress.com
they have parts prices for the conversion.
also Don S who posts here did such a conversion on a Bayliner with a 460, it is in the projects section of
www.baylinerownersclub.org
it is VERY pricey though
try doug russell first, I got some hard to find OMC manifolds from them last winter.

Re: 88 OMC King Cobra problems

I have a 1992 king cobra drive and lost a whole season because no one in NJ could rebuild it. I located a shop in Orlando FL. EJB Marine Serv Inc. ( 407-447-2628) 3 weeks later my drive was rebuilt. Been running strong for last 2 seasons. Hope this helps.
