My drivers side window lately goes down flawlessly but sometimes takes several tries on the up button to make the window go up..just tonight I couldnt get it to go up before school, luckily no rain.. I suspect its in the switch as the motor does go up eventually... Now in this switch panel I also have a power lock button that will lock both doors, but will not unlock either door when pressed.. In fact both doors have power lock buttons that will lock the doors but will not unlock. Any ideas on the lock situation, im looking into the switch tomorrow in the light but the locks im unsure of..I could see 1 door not wanting to unlock the locks but both? That makes me think its more then just a bad "unlock " switch.

Re: 88 regal door switches

you need to do some checking on a few things before you go replacing switches.

1. Does the window TRY to go up but is just very slow or jerks and stops. Older GN cars are known for window motors to go bad. Keep in mind the window weight helps going down but strains the motor going up.

2. If the window acts like it does not want to move at all you need to see if you have power to the window switch. Another known GM problem is for the wiring in the door jam to break from years of opening and shutting the door. This sometime can be found by opening and shutting the door when pressing the window button. When the wire is in a certain position it will make contact and work. This could also be the problem with the door locks not working being how the wires run right with the window motor wires.

A little probing with a volt meter can tell you a lot and keep you from replacing parts that do not need to be replaced and do not fix your problem.

Hope this helps!

Re: 88 regal door switches

Im guessing its the motor going out, basically all the switch does is reverse polarity on the motor for window up or down, and I had continuity through the switch...took the door interior off and grabbed onto the slide bar that runs in the track on the bottom and it took a little wiggling but eventually got the window up,normally once the window starts going up its good, almost like it gets jammed on the track?... $45 for a new motor so not to bad..

While I was in there I looked at the power lock buttons, that rocker switch just hits 2 push buttons on a circuit board that holds both window switches and my power lock switch... Im thinking the lock ram may do the same as the window motors and reverse polarity and that would help explain why both doors lock the locks but neither door will unlock the locks..Im thinking a broken wire somewhere..Not looking to good on that one.

we had the same problem with our 2001 pontiac montana last year. the passenger side window would go down but not up. replaced the switch with a $5 junkyard one and works fine now.
