I have a 1988 Searay 268 Sundancer with a 454 engine in it. Not sure what outdrive this has, but one day it was going along and fell out of gear. Hasn't gone into gear since. Prop locks when I put it into gear, but when running it doesn't go forward or reverse. If anyone has any ideas, it would be greatly appreciated. If I need to post more info, let me know(I'm not sure about much of it though....)

Nope. No smoke or anything. Moving lever back and forth in gear gets the same response as moving it back and forth out of gear. Nothing but rev-ing the engine up so at least the throttle still works.
One day while going along, it just fell out of gear, the RPMs went up, and we slowed to a stop. Never gone into gear since.

Just a thought. Your may have spun the hub in your prop. In this case it would feel like it would still go into gear when out of the water. But when you try to run it in the water under load it would seem like it never went into gear.

Don't know if this will apply to your outdrive, but my '83 800 series stringer did exactly the same thing to me last fall. Turns out it was the water pump shaft that stripped. Tore down the upper and replaced the two shafts and a bearing (which I screwed up while dismantling) and also replaced the seals in the bottom end for good measure. total cost for parts was about $700
Hope this helps
Fred
