Need some help with motor paint / anodes...
Best I can tell I have a 1991 Johnson 88 spl outboard motor on a 1964 17-6 Whaler.
The paint on the lower unit is peeling off below the water line. The boat is in fresh water for 5 months at a time.
We wire wheeled the entire shaft and unit, primed (green) and painted (white) with motor paint from West Marine. We did not paint the trim fin (not sure what to call it). All the white paint came off and the shaft and unit are now a darker green approaching black.
The questions are... did the primer come off too causing the aluminum to oxidize and look blackish? or is it just the white and why did it all come off? or ...?
We are suspecting the cause to be the anode or anodes.
If so, where can we locate them or part numbers, how many are there?
